Councils & Biodiversity: The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Conference 2019

 

Local Authority/Council staff, Councillors, Planners, Engineer, Landscape Architects, Sustainability, Parks and Gardens staff, are invited to this conference on land management to support pollinating insects.

Our pollinating insects have suffered huge declines in recent decades, with one-third of our 99 Bee species at risk of extinction. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is a shared plan of action that aims to reverse those declines by increasing pollinator-friendly habitats across the island.

Training will be provided on the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan as well as an interesting line-up of guest speakers, who can offer advice on managing public lands for biodiversity; what to plant for pollinators; how to alter current mowing regimes; and road verge maintenance. This will be an opportunity for knowledge exchange and to learn from the experiences of other pollinator project managers.

Dr Una FitzPatrick is an ecologist at the National Biodiversity Data Centre, where she manages the National Vascular Plant Database, the National Vegetation Database, and the Irish Pollinator Initiative. She is a co-founder of the All-Ireland Polinator Plan and is Chair of the Plan’s Steering Group.

Rory Finnegan has been Head Gardener for the OPW in Castletown House and Parkland Celbridge for the last 12 years. A keen amateur ecologist with a background in environmental education Rory has combined his skills to manage Castletown's habitats for the last decade. This year he is introducing a pilot scheme to increase the population of Red Mason Bees and plans to create a Biodiversity Garden. Castletown House has received Pollinator for Parks awards in 2017 and 2018.

Anne Murray is an ecologist and is currently working as the Biodiversity Officer in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Her main role as the Biodiversity Officer is the drafting and implementation of a Biodiversity Plan for the County. She is also helping the Council fulfil its obligations with regard to Biodiversity, including in relation to planning and development, as well as raising awareness of biodiversity and issues affecting biodiversity in the county with a broad range of groups.

Prof Jane Stout, Trinity College Dublin, has been working on pollinator ecology and conservation for more than 20 years. She is a Professor in Botany at Trinity College Dublin, and leads research into bee health, valuing pollinators, biodiversity enhancement on farmland, and sustainable pesticide use. She was one of the lead authors of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and is Deputy Chair of the Plan’s Steering Group.

Nick Mole joined PAN UK in March 2007 as the UK and European Programme Coordinator. Nick works on a number of different areas including UK agricultural pesticide policy, and is currently running the PAN UK Pesticide Free Towns Campaign, which aims to reduce and stop the use of pesticides in the amenity sector. PAN UK has been working in collaboration with a number of UK councils to trial non-chemical weed control methods and to switch away from the use of pesticides.

His portfolio includes a diverse range of projects from transport planning to parkland, exhibition and residential design. Kildare Town Plans.
